Overview:
Today, you are the scientist! On this tour you'll join an experienced fossil expert from the Fundy Treasures team to become “Paleontologist for the Day.” Exploring along the famous Joggins cliff section you will not only find fossils, but also experience the whole research process exactly as “real” scientists do it.
The tour starts with an hour long museum visit to the Fossil Centre with your expert guide Brian Hebert who, in fact, discovered many of the fossils on display there. With that as background to help train your eyes, you will receive a geology loupe that is yours to keep, and then Brian will take you on a 3 hour walking tour to do field work along the fossil cliffs.
Here, exploring the evidence of a 315 million year old ecosystem, you will record your finds by measurement and drawings in a field notebook that you get to keep. From these notes then you will write your own scientific “publication” on your discoveries.
In this way, you will use the tools and experience the whole process of paleontology, from exploration to discovery to publication, along the way learning about new tools and techniques that have advanced the science in recent years.
At one of the special stops along the cliffs, we will all take a break to have a lunch that was specially prepared for us by a local caterer. (Please let us know if you have any dietary requests)
And finally, using one of your finds from the day, you will create your own fossil replica to take with you and keep.
