Brian Hebert Receives the 2023 Harrell L. Strimple Award for Paleontology

2023 Harrell L. Strimple Award Recipient: Celebrating Brian Hebert

We’re thrilled to share that our very own Brian Hebert has been named the recipient of the 2023 Harrell L. Strimple Award, one of the most respected honours in the world of paleontology.

Presented annually by the Geological Society of America, the Strimple Award recognizes exceptional contributions made by an amateur paleontologist—someone whose passion, dedication, and scientific impact have meaningfully advanced the field. Brian’s decades of work exploring Nova Scotia’s fossil‑rich landscapes, documenting discoveries, collaborating with researchers, and sharing his knowledge with the public have made him a standout figure in Canadian paleontology.

From uncovering rare fossils along the Bay of Fundy to helping safeguard important specimens for scientific study, Brian’s efforts have contributed to a deeper understanding of Nova Scotia’s prehistoric past. His work bridges science and community—bringing paleontology to life for students, visitors, and anyone curious about the ancient world beneath our feet.

In October 2023, Brian travelled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he accepted the award in person at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting. Surrounded by scientists, researchers, and fellow fossil enthusiasts, he was recognized for his remarkable record of research, publication, public service, and collaboration.

We couldn’t be prouder to see Brian’s lifelong passion honoured on an international stage. His curiosity, generosity, and commitment to sharing Nova Scotia’s natural history continue to inspire everyone who joins us on the shoreline.

Congratulations, Brian — this achievement is so well deserved.
